Résumé
During the second world war, in a small town in northern France lives Edouard Martin, a middle-aged insurance broker whose hobby is collecting orchids. He is considered by all to be a quiet nonentity. In fact, he is the head of the local resistance group. Safely hidden behind this dull, father-figure camouflage, Martin organizes Allied parachute drops, blows up German petrol supplies and even executes a French traitor trying to infiltrate his network.
Though Monique, his grown-up daughter, finally guesses the truth, Martin’s wife suspects nothing and his teenage son is ashamed of what he considers his father’s cowardice.
Calling London by radio, Martin arranges a bombing raid on the local factory, which manufactures weapons for the enemy. However, several French families live near the factory so, on the day the air raid is due, Martin organizes, a safe distance away, a fake engagement party for his daughter, to which all in danger are invited. After the successful destruction of the factory with, surprisingly, no civilian casualties, the Germans become suspicious and Martin is arrested. His son, who has meanwhile run off to join the local resistance fighters, belatedly discovers that his father is a hero.
